Cut slate with the hole punch down to leave a chamfered edge.Cut slate or fiber cement shingles with the hole punch up to leave a straight edge. In France and Germany, roofing slates are typically thinner than what we use here in the USA. Hand-held slate cutters such as the Freund Mastercut are popular there for that reason.This cutter is not easy to use on thicker slates. If you want to cut standard 1/4 inch thick American slates, use one of the other slate cutters that has a long handle.
